Kirstin Wright has worked for 16 years now, primarily as a creature/character animator - with sidelines in matchmoving, 3D modelling, conceptual art and the paraphernalia of visual effects.

NOTE - The term "digi-doll" refers to a digital model (usually based on an actor.) You will see it mentioned frequently below.

2011

Green Lantern - (Motion Picture - Warner Brothers Pictures/DC Entertainment)

position: Senior match-move artist

role: Positioning and hand-tracking the entire digital body suit and mask of Hal Jordan to the body of actor Ryan Reynolds, over several key scenes. In many instances the information of the supporting 'witness cameras' (offside cameras shooting at the same time as the main) was obscured or ineffective, rendering tracking information incomplete, and so my knowledge of the human form and that of an animator, was invaluable in lining up the mesh accurately by eye. This job required painstaking detail, as some of the shots were close up, slow, and 'hero' moments.

2010

Spartacus: Blood and Sand - (TV - Starz Productions)

Modelling , rendering & animating a low-resolution digi-doll of a generic Roman soldier & cloak.

Candyman - (Lone Pine & Picnic Productions, Dir. Costa Botes)

Modelling and animating props/lettering for titles and end credits.

Gruff - (Short Film - Gareth Van Niekerk, Louis Mendiola)

Tracking and painting digital mattes in Photoshop, to clear the city of Auckland of evident life.

2009

Under The Mountain - (Motion Picture - Liberty Films)

Digi-dolls made of the two children, for distance shots, modelled low-resolution and animated.

Skyrunners - (TV - Walt Disney Productions)

Lead tracker/matchmover for the flying vehicle's digital shell.

The Vintner's Luck - (Motion Picture - Acajou Films)

position: Lead matchmover, & wing animator.

role: Hand-tracking the entire rig of the virtual wings, to the live footage of the actor's back/body, with no other visual reference (no tracking points, no supporting off-side cameras). Added animation after.

2008

Legend of the Seeker - Season Two - (ABC Studios, Paperboy Productions, Renaissance Pictures)

Lead creature animator on episodes 1 and 19. Visual effects and other modelling/animation over several episodes.

Kiwi Dip - (advertisement, Nestlé)

Xena: Warrior Princess – Season Six (series - Renaissance Pictures)

1995 – 1999

Worked for Gnome Productions and then Zippitoons, as clean-up artist, and latterly an animator/illustrator, various projects, incl:

Cleanup art on the animated version of “
Hairy Maclary

Summer stint in 1995 at
Sunshine Books as a supplemental illustrator and layout artist.

Footnotes: I very much enjoyed being a part of the production crew on Xena:Warrior Princess. I remember right when the NZ effects division was just starting up, Rob Tapert (producer) came in with a book of Doré's angels, for one of the episodes, and said "I want something like this."
Pretty damned cool.

In regard to the character builds it has always been invaluable to have a practical model as reference. The wings of the angel, and the body texture and sheer detail of the Screeling (modelled/built by others) would not have been nearly as convincing without it.
I love real objects and hugely admire the practical departments.
The detail is in the "dirt" - the subtle markings on a genuine object.
